FAQs

When is a neuropsychological evaluation appropriate?

However, it may be more than usual forgetfulness or inattention when these instances become more severe, frequent, or make it difficult for someone to go about their day. When this occurs, a neuropsychological evaluation can help determine the difference between typical cognitive difficulties and those that may be more significant.

What is involved in a neuropsychological evaluation?

Prior to the evaluation, the client will be emailed a detailed history questionnaire. They will be asked to bring the completed questionnaire with them on the day of the evaluation.

On the day of the evaluation, the neuropsychologist will first conduct a clinical interview where they will review the questionnaire and discuss any additional questions or concerns.

Next, is the evaluation. The assessments given will involve both questions and answers and working with material (i.e., paper and pencil) at a table. Some of the assessments may be administered on a computer. The tests administered will vary depending on the concerns raised in the referral and clinical interview.

How long is a neuropsychological evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation typically lasts between 4-8 hours. The length of time depends on the reason for the referral, the age of the client, and the questions the client and/or physician need answered.

What happens when the neuropsychological evaluation is over?

Once the evaluation is completed a separate feedback appointment will be scheduled before the client leaves the office. After the evaluation, the neuropsychologist will write a detailed, comprehensive report reviewing the client’s performance on the assessment. The report will detail the client’s strengths and weaknesses, any appropriate cognitive diagnoses, and treatment recommendations.

The feedback session will last approximately one hour. At that appointment, the results of the evaluation and treatment recommendations will be reviewed with the client, and any questions or concerns will be addressed.

How can I prepare for a neuropsychological evaluation?

There is no way to “study” for the evaluation. The tests are trying to get a sense of what you can do now, so there is no need to learn any new material or skills. The evaluation examines cognitive strengths and weaknesses, so the best approach is to come in and do your best.

Most clients find they are best prepared by getting a good night’s sleep and eating a healthy breakfast before the evaluation. It is also important to wear comfortable clothes and dress in layers (i.e., a hoodie or a sweater). Please make sure to wear any necessary glasses or contacts. Also, please make sure that any hearing devices are charged, in working condition, and worn to the evaluation.

Please bring a list of current medications and any relevant medical (i.e., MRI, CT, EEG) or academic records (IEPs).
